Pennine Way - South Section

Ancient packhorse trails and drovers’ ways traverse this appealing southern section of the Pennine Way across the windswept moors of the South Pennines.

Wild and remote, the Pennines have a unique atmosphere. It’s built on views like those from Kinder Scout and Pinshaw Beacon, and immersive landscapes like that at Top Withen, a romantic moorland setting that reputedly inspired Wuthering Heights.

Add to this the limestone scenery of the Yorkshire Dales, and the bustling villages that welcome you in all along the route, and the South Section of the Pennine Way becomes a windswept and beautiful exploration of daunting landscapes and cosy inns.

“Our 5th Contours holiday and right up there with the best. Amazing scenery, open spaces, warm beds and friendly local people. And we only got soaked once! We really benefited from the rest day in the middle (clearly showing our age!) and would recommend to others who want to take on a challenging walk without overdoing it.”
